March 14-16 was the annual International Shuri-Ryu Association seminar held in Ft. Wayne, IN. Here I am with Hanshi Robert Bowles, Shuri-Ryu Chief Instructor and stylehead of Shuri-Ryu for the ISA. Hanshi Bowles taught eiku bo at the seminar.
To my surprise, two of my teachers when I was a kid at the Trias dojo were also there. Chief Instructors Sensei Dale Benson and Sensei Tony Bisanz. Sensei Bisanz was elevated from Assistant Chief Instructor to full Chief Instructor over the weekend.
Hanshi Ridgely Abele taught Shuri-Ryu kata alternative bunkai (application).
Sensei Benson and I shaking hands. I had not seen Sensei Benson since 1989. Sensei Benson taught Shuri-Ryu basics and close-in fighting. He was glad to hear that the aikido I am learning is a hard style of aikido that is associated with Master Steven Seagal.
Sensei Tony Bisanz and Sensei Eddie Bethea (on left). Sensei Bisanz was on my review board when I tested for shodan in 1993. Sensei Bethea practices Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan under Master Shugoro Nakazato of Okinawa.
Joey Johnston is a student of Shuri-Ryu Chief Instructor Shihan Joe Walker and won the 2008 Shuri Cup competition. Here I am as part of his bunkai team. I took 3rd place in the 3rd Dan to 4th Dan division.
